carbon steel specifications

Case hardened carbon steel bearing balls

American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 1018

In carbon steel  the main alloying element is carbon.  As carbon content rises steel has the ability to become harder and stronger through heat treating but this also makes it less ductile. Regardless of the heat treatment higher carbon content reduces weldability and lowers the melting point of carbon steel.

Case hardening

The case hardening processes hardens only the exterior of the steel ball creating a hard wear resistant skin or case while preserving a tough and ductile interior.  This property of carbon steel can be beneficial because it gives the surface good wear characteristics but leaves the core tough.
